The SD card comes with a preinstalled 'certificate' file to verify the map installation is genuine. TomTom Home needs to be able to read this - often when it's a preinstalled map it cannot read the certificate, and therefore, cannot offer the Map Update Service to you. G allowed me to record my tracks and layout routes with Mapsource while in the Okavango delta wih my Pajero 4x4. The maps have got a bit out of date so I needed an update late last year. It was a huge decision as neither G or TT were supporting smartphones properly - G's Mobile XT was released in 2008, has not being updated. TT are stuck with N 7.9 also 2008 release.
In the end I have made a choice, buy v8 maps for TT v7, they work thankfully, but I cannot get TT Home 2 to recognise when I plug in my phone, so will miss the map updates. I now purchase Tracks4Africa maps for my off road work and use G XT Mobile. The big problem is that the biggest and best PND map producers are not not particually interested in the smartphone market - apart from the iPhone. After investing so much in building up their core map data, they seem to be handing this market to Bing and Google and not spending a bit of R&D on upgrading their UI for the newer platforms, Android and W7.5 or W8.
